The Scars We Don't See: How I learned to Stop Hiding and Own My Story
When people talk about scars, they usually mean the physical one, the marks left behind on our skin. But the heaviest, most painful scars I carry are the ones no one else could see.
For a long time, I lived a life that looked complete on the outside. I was a successful businesswoman working as a manager in the trade show industry. I was organized, capable, and driven. But after a car accident, pain medication entered the picture, and what started as relief quietly ignited a deep addiction.
Before I fully understood what was happening, the addiction merged with a deeply toxic relationship. Together, they pulled me into a tornado, spinning completely out of control, tearing through every piece of the life I had worked so hard to build, and leaving nothing behind but destruction.
The Cycle and the Spiral
What followed was a vicious, exhausting cycle that lasted for years. I would fight for sobriety, get clean, and then relapse. I went in and out of rehabs and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs).
Eventually, the tornado touched every single corner of my life:
The Career I Lost: I ended up leaving my trade show position for reasons that felt selfish at the time. That decision effectively ended my career in an industry I loved, a regret that weighed on me like lead for years.
The Legal & Living Chaos: The spiral brought two DUIs, domestic dispute arrests, and a total loss of stability being evicted from my home, moving from sober living houses to living out of hotels.
The Isolation & Guilt: I felt like a terrible mother, racked with guilt and consumed by shame over the person I had become. I resented my ex, and I lost friendships along the way, relationships I now realize slipped through my fingers because of the chaos and toxic environment surrounding me.
Terrified of being judged, I retreated into complete isolation. I put up a wall, smiled when I had to, and pretended everything was fine because facing the truth out loud felt far too humiliating.
Reframing the Destruction
For years, I believed those events defined me. I thought losing my career, hitting
rock bottom, and carrying those arrests meant my story was over.
It took going through hell and back to realize something crucial: I am not the tornado. I am the survivor who walked out of the wreckage.
Losing that career broke my heart, but I’ve come to learn that everything happens for a reason. That destruction cleared away the illusion that I could keep pretending. The scars from those years, the mugshots, the lost friendships, the nights in hotel rooms, the battle with addiction are no longer badges of shame. They are hard earned proof of my resilience.
Most people couldn't walk a mile in the shoes I’ve worn. The fact that I am standing here today, almost 2 years sober of no opiates and actively rebuilding my life piece by piece, proves how much strength was inside me all along.

I’m no longer hiding who I was or what I went through. I own every chapter of my past now, because every single part of it built the strength I have today.
