Turntable needle over vinyl with text: I have a therapist. Her name is music. Soft pastel, soothing mood.

We all have that one thing we turn to when life gets heavy, a tool we use to cope when the days are hard to face. For me, that anchor is music. Music is my therapy, and it is my serenity. It is what got me through the absolute darkest days of my addiction, the long hours in rehab, and the painful moments in past relationships. Even now, whenever a bad day creeps in, music is the first place I go. It isn't just background noise to fill the silence; it’s a lifeline. It is one of the most powerful tools we have for transformation, healing, and reclaiming our peace.

If you’ve been following my journey here on Road to Redemption, you know that changing your life starts with changing your mindset. And honestly? Sometimes changing your mindset starts with simply putting on the right song.

The Instant Shift: From Heavy to Happy

Have you ever been stuck in a negative head space, completely overwhelmed by stress or old memories, and then a specific intro plays through your speakers? Suddenly, your whole vibe begins to change. You start truly feeling the music, singing along, or if you’re like me, straight-up dancing. Without even realizing it, your whole mood changed.

Music has that beautiful, unique power to skip past our thoughts and change our emotions on the spot. Whether it’s the relaxing rhythm of reggae, the high-energy escape of a trance track, or the raw, poetic storytelling of great hip-hop or the beat, music meets us exactly where we are. But it doesn't leave us there. It pulls us forward.

I live my life to a soundtrack. Music is my companion. Some days, I’m listening from the moment I wake up until I'm winding down in the shower after a long day of work. Other days, when I need to change my mindset or need a reminder of who I am , I just turn the volume all the way up. It is impossible to stay stuck in a dark place when the music is blasting. It actively alters how we see our world, giving us a narrative of resilience. It reminds us that we aren't victims of our circumstances, we are the creators of our own comebacks.

Soundtracks of Survival: Inside My Personal Mix

If you took a look at my current playlist, you would think I was having a bit of an identity crisis. In the span of an hour, I will go from rhyming hip-hop lyrics to singing old alternative or r&b music, right into the massive, euphoric peaks of vocal trance or techno beats as we use to call it back in the day. Then I'll throw on some reggaeton, because even though I don't understand the words, the rhythm hits just right. As SNAP says in their song " Rhythm is a dancer, it's a soul's companion, you can feel it everywhere, lift your hands and voices, free your mind and join us you can feel it in the air".

I’m also guilty of hearing someone say a random word and immediately breaking into a song lyric that matches it. On paper, it sounds chaotic and I probably look crazy doing it, but I don't care. It’s my ultimate formula for a mindset reset. My music matches the exact phases of my life: deep reflection, old memories, pure grit, and total celebration.

Take a look at my ultimate soundtrack of life or my transformation mix:

  • Phase 1: The Foundation – Jay-Z, Nas, Fabolous, Biggie, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Drake, Lil Wayne, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj. Heavy beats that ground me, keep me sharp. It brings out my confident side (and maybe a little bit of my thug side, let's be real. LOL).

  • Phase 2: The Shift – When I need to process deep feelings, I turn to the guitars of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Creed, Metallica or the vulnerable energy of Staind, or Audioslave

  • Phase 3: The Peak – To clear my mind entirely and feel undeniable joy, I blast Edward Maya, Calvin Harris, Tiësto, Showtek, and Martin Garrix.

  • Phase 4: R&B and Pop Music – The perfect soundtrack for singing along Usher, Chris Brown, Aaliyah, Ciara unwinding, and tapping into pure happiness.

What’s Your Redemption Anthem?

We are all writing the soundtracks to our own lives. If you are going through a transition, trying to build a brighter future, or just trying to get through a tough week, I challenge you to look at your playlist.

Ditch the tracks that keep you anchored to past pain, and turn up the beats that make you want to move, breathe, and conquer the world. Music is a daily reminder that joy is always within reach if we just tune into the right frequency.

White quote on dark background reads: Into the music I go, to lose my mind, and find my soul.
